5 Things Commercial Owners Should Know About Mold
If you suspect mold, give SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow a call! We are trained and ready to help!
5 Mold Facts Commercial Property Owners Should Be Aware Of
Commercial property owners in Broken Arrow, OK, have a great deal of responsibility on their plates. They must understand not only how to run an operation but keep it safe and viable for business. That task entails working to ensure that the place is free of hazards such as black mold. What are those pesky microbes, and why should proprietors care about their growth? The following are five things owners should know to remain free of contamination.
1. Fungus is everywhere
Mold isn't something owners can keep off of the property. Thousands of species thrive in nature, moving about easily. The wind picks them up, carrying them to different locations and blowing into buildings through doors, windows and vents. The pests cling to shoes and clothes. Customers and employees then drag them into the store without even knowing. Understand that mold, therefore, is around your establishment. It is in your structure.
2. Moisture Is the Problem
Owners won't deal with mold cleanup unless they have a water concern. The dampness triggers the mold to reproduce, eating away at organic products. Without the wetness, the spores are harmless.
3. It Infests Rapidly
Once moisture activates black mold, it spreads within one to two days. It's hard to stop once it begins, moving within walls and flooring with ease.
4. Focus on Drying Efforts
Because the water encourages multiplication, concentrate on fixing leaks and dampness as soon as possible. A water remediation company can investigate the moisture problem, determining the extent of harm. They can section off the area and assist in removing excess humidity. Their services focus on running industrial dehumidifiers to extract wetness from the air and structure.
5. Tear Outs Are Necessary
Saturated, porous materials harbor fungal spores. They penetrate deep within the objects, permitting them to live in hard-to-clean areas. To ultimately reduce the count, remove the soaked sections.
Commercial buildings probably have black mold. Its presence is grounds for concern when water damage spawns their growth. For this reason, be vigilant about keeping the place dry and repairing plumbing trouble.
Broken Arrow Roof Leak Creates Mold Risk
If you suspect mold, give us a call.
Recently, a long-time Broken Arrow resident had the very unpleasant experience to witness multiple issues damage her home. Northeast Oklahoma's variety of seasons of wind, storm, hail, ice, and rain during extreme heat and very cold temperatures finally took its toll on her roof. Water had breached the protection that the roof is designed to provide.
Since she happens to be physically unable to access her attic, she was unaware of the water intrusion for an undetermined length of time. The situation built up until the evidence finally was visible on her ceilings. Upon discovery, she reached out to the local team at SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow.
We were able to quickly remove the water, the suspected mold and the contaminated, unrestorable items, dry out her home and help her to get her life back to a normal and peaceful future.
Mold is not anything to be casual about. Please give us a call if you also discover mold or water intrusion in your home or business. We are always ready to help!
Hey children, what's that smell? Everybody look what's in our wall.
The sound of mold-covered wall coming down.
This title probably dates the era I grew up in and that is okay. What is not okay is to notice a musty odor in your home, or in this case, a commercial environment in Tulsa, and not investigate. By the time the occupants were able to secure someone to check out their suspicions, the damage from mold had become quite extensive. The source of the moisture was eliminated. The next step was dealing with a massive mold situation.
Knowing this was more than a single maintenance person could properly mitigate, they wisely, called in professionals, the SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow team. We were able to remove all affected non-salvageable materials and contents, clean and seal what was necessary, then scrub and dry the air. The building was then ready to be restored.
When the unexpected happens, call our SERVPRO team. We are ready for whatever happens.
When you life is disrupted by mold
"...Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes." Chuck Swindoll
Our lives are frequently disrupted. Often we cannot undo the event, so our response to the disruption is the main thing we can control.
Some good advice is found in Success magazine (Fall 2018 Issue) called, The "Only Constant" written by speaker and author, Jim Rohn. Here is an excerpt:Speaker and author, Jim Rohn. Excerpts:
"In life, the winds of circumstances blow on us all in an unending flow that touches each of our lives. It’s one thing to create change, it’s another thing—often unavoidable—to have change foisted upon you when you don’t expect it.
We all experienced the blowing winds of change. Yet some of us still manage to reach our intended destinations. What guides us to different shores is determined by the way we have chosen to set our sails. The way that each of us thinks makes the major difference in where each of us arrives.
Unforeseen circumstances happen to us all. We have disappointments and challenges. We all have reversals and those moments when, in spite of our best plans and efforts, things just seem to fall apart. Challenging circumstances are not events reserved for the poor, the uneducated or the destitute. The rich and the poor have marital problems. The rich and the poor have the same challenges that can lead to financial ruin and personal despair. In the final analysis, it is not what happens that determines the quality of our lives, it is what we choose to do when we discover that the wind has changed directions.
When things change, we must change. We must struggle to our feet again and reset the sail to steer us toward the destination of our own deliberate choosing. The set of the sail—how we think and how we respond—has a far greater capacity to alter our lives than any challenges we face. How quickly and responsibly we react to adversity is far more important than the adversity itself. Once we discipline ourselves to understand this, we will finally and willingly conclude that the great challenge of life is to control the process of our thinking.
Learning to reset the sail with the changing winds rather than permitting ourselves to be blown in a direction you did not purposely choose requires the development of a whole new discipline. It involves going to work on establishing a powerful, personal philosophy that will help to influence in a positive way all that you do, think and decide."
When the wind has blown you into a mold, water, fire, etc. damage. Refrain from becoming anxious. And know that you are not alone. We can help you sail through this unplanned journey.
Preparing for that last chance before summer is over
Keep the memories sweet when you get back home!
It's startling to comprehend that Summer 2018 is nearly at its end! That realization often prompts us to schedule one last "Hurrah" before Fall enters our world. If this is hitting home with you, be certain to properly prepare yourself and your loved ones, and your home for your get-away.
Since no one will be home, one might consider turning off the HVAC system in order to be energy- efficient. If this is your mindset, please reconsider. We live in the great state of Oklahoma- beautiful, green, and in August, also hot and humid. Especially this summer with the cycle of thunderstorms the past several weeks.
The outside humidity and heat affect our indoor humidity and heat levels. Running the air conditioner, even on a higher temperature, will help maintain a more desirable humidity level in your home and lessen the risk of finding the unwanted guest of mold visiting your home upon your return from vacation.
Pack your bags, and have fun! Remember us if you ever have a need- we are ready to help you in all seasons!
DIY Not Always the Best Route
Unfortunately, the owner did not know floor was wet
The force is strong- the drive to meet and beat the challenge that is facing you. There are times, however when it is best to call in professionals.
Often, during a water migration, the water that is visible is jus a small representation of the full amount of water that has entered forbidden areas.
Water wicks up walls and furniture and sometimes it is not detectable by touch. An avid do it yourself enthusiast might pull out the shop vac and a couple of fans and think all is well in a day or so.
Frequently, we are called in to a home or business where there was a previous water intrusion that was not completely or properly dried and has developed into secondary damage such as rot or mold issue. Sometime the dampness seems to have attracted insects as well.
We’re all for standing up to life events as they occur, but do encourage to know when to seek professionals who are equipped with knowledge, experience, compassion, specialized equipment, and a zeal for helping folks in crisis.
When you see water where is should not be, give SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow a call. We're always here to help you evaluate if you can handle it on your own, or ought to get assistance.
Are you as smart as a five-year old?
This is where it is wet.
Recently, a very bright girl who happens to be only five years old discovered very wet carpet in her closet while she and her mom were picking up her toys. This girl immediately stated that they needed to call SERVPRO right then. She got the number from her mother and called SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow to relay her desperate situation. Abigail cheerfully took down her information and reassured her that the problem would be addressed right away. This remarkable child also drew a diagram of the water saturating her closet floor to aid with the inspection.
Now, listen. If a five year old child is smart enough to know that SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow is the best choice to call for a water emergency, don't you think you can do the same?

Peace by removing pieces (of mold)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has good information about mold and personal health.
"Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all. Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, molds can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. People with mold allergies may have more severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may get serious infections in their lungs when they are exposed to mold. These people should stay away from areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas." https://www.cdc.gov/mold/dampness_facts.htm

When you least expect it
What's in your wall...?
Sometimes a project begins to grow once it has begun. Kitchen and bath remodels are quite famous for snowballing from a carefully planned and budgeted minor project to an eventful host of multiple, sometimes costly surprises.
Sometimes in the process of mitigating a water or fire damage, similar unexpected situations surprise us and our customers. In this situation, there was no expectation to discover what appears to be mold growth lurking behind the cove base on this wall. A SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow team member removed the base in order to drill holes to expedite drying inside the saturated wall cavity, which is a common practice to help speed up the drying process.
While mold is practically everywhere in our environment, have concentrated amounts in our everyday life is undesirable.
Lessen the risk of mold indoors
A hygrometer is your friend!
My husband grew up in southern Louisiana. His family would recount the constant battle against mold growth in the home due to high humidity. At the change of season, they would usually find mold growing in shoes and clothing stored for several months in closets, and would find mold growing on walls right behind furniture.
While we do not have to maintain the same degree of mold vigilance as my husband’s family did; here in Oklahoma’s Green Country, we do have fairly humid air, partly due to the many beautiful manmade lakes in our area. Humidity makes for a mold-friendly environment. If mold adversely affects us, we can be aware of the mold spore counts when going outdoors and take precautions when the level is high.
Indoors, is where we do have the ability to control the humidity levels and elevated mold risks. In our home and business, we have placed several inexpensive hygrometers. Most folks prefer a humidity level of 40-50%. If the level seems too high, we can usually trace it to a recent shower, or outdoor increase in humidity. Just a few weeks ago, we were able to trace increased humidity in one area at home to a leaky faucet and got it repaired. Simple tools can sometimes help us with peace of mind knowing we are doing what we can to avoid unhealthy indoor environment.
Should you find your home or business with mold due to high humidity or water leaks, SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow is ready and waiting to assist you in properly dealing with the mold and get your indoor environment back to a safe and healthy status.
Oklahoma Green Country
Rain kept falling through the wall
Who remembers another August like this one? Yep, me neither! As a life-long Tulsa area Okie, all my memories of August are weeks of hot, humid seek-out-the pool or air-conditioning days. I am not complaining, though! The much needed rains have replenished many parts of our great state that had been plagued by years of drought. Green Country has remained GREEN all summer!
However, the abundance of rain and humidity often is accompanied by increased mold spores. In the great outdoors, meteorologists measure and report mold spore counts, alerting those with sensitivity to take precautions. Mold that occurs indoors in your home or business is unwanted and chronic exposure can create increased health risks.
Be alert for musty odors, signs of visible mold, or symptoms of mold allergies. Excessive interior mold should be investigated and safely eliminated. Allow SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow to safely remove mold contaminated surfaces in your indoor environment. We are always ready to help keep Green Country clean and green!
Undetected slow leak was supplying moisture for suspected mold.
How does one deal with mold if it is not detected? For an unknown length of time, a very slow leak underneath a cabinet was supplying moisture to this suspected mold colony in a Coweta, Oklahoma kitchen. Once the home owners investigated a musty odor, they were unpleasantly surprised to find the suspicious evidence. Getting the leak fixed stopped the moisture supply, but what were they to do next?
Testing by an environmental hygienist confirmed their suspicions of mold. SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow was called to follow the protocol, designed by the hygienist to contain the affected area, properly remove the unrestorable mold-contaminated items, replace and restore what was possible. The home owners were able to get back to normal quickly. Call us, we are always ready to help!
Avoid Mold Scare Scams
SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow followed the Environmental Hygienist's protocol so these apartment walls could hear life again.
Recently, on a Dr. Oz program, a segment aired about mold. Expert testimony advised the audience to use common sense and caution when dealing with mold. Some of the points made:
* Do not use bleach for mold eradication.
* With a small area of mold, you should be able to clean it with soap and water. If the area is over ten square feet, professionals should be obtained to properly identify and remove the mold.
* Most insurance companies do not offer extensive mold coverage.
* In order to avoid any conflict of interest, the contractor remediating the mold should be a different person/ company than the one inspecting the mold.
SERVPRO of Greater Broken Arrow has certified technicians who have been removing mold from homes and businesses since 2006. Please give us a call, 910-250-2300, if you suspect mold in your living or working space.
Mold is nearly everywhere. Is that a problem?
Mold went undetected until a box was moved.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
